What is Business Debtors Anonymous?
Business Debtors Anonymous (BDA) is a distinct and dynamic but not separate part of Debtors
Anonymous (DA). BDA was created to focus on the recovery of members of the DA fellowship
who are either business owners or self-employed (artists, writers etc). Together, members of BDA
support one another in applying the DA principles and tools when owning and running a business.
However, as part of DA, there is no separate membership for attending Business Debtors
Anonymous meetings. It is understood that paying bills for goods and services rendered according to
agreed upon terms does not constitute debting.
Am I a business debtor?
There are particular issues that arise for such people, both in managing their businesses, and in
keeping them separate from their home lives. Note that the primary purpose of BDA is to operate
businesses without incurring debt, and personal debting issues should be addressed at regular DA
meetings. Some of the common difficulties BDA members face are:
· We neither know when bills or taxes are due, nor do we remember if and what we have paid or
still owe.
· We confuse our personal finances with our business finances.
· We often do not know the exact costs of our overheads, operating expenses or profit margins.
· We lived in a state of deprivation for the sake of our business.
How can Business Debtors Anonymous help?
In BDA we learn to operate our business along spiritual lines and we find that operating with
integrity and being of service is profitable. Some of the tools we use are:
· We operate our businesses without incurring unsecured debt.
· We accumulate cash reserves, pay our bills and employees on time, pay ourselves a regular salary
with benefits and vacation time and build a thriving, prosperous, debt-free and financially solvent
business.
· We learn how to put ourselves first and our businesses second.
· We have a business plan and goals and visions for ourselves and our businesses.
· We budget our time realistically and focus our work time on generating revenue.
· We maintain regular contact with our BDA sponsors who support us in working the Twelve Steps
and Twelve Traditions of DA.
· We have regular BDA pressure relief groups.
· We maintain regular contact with a DA action partner.
· We attend BDA & DA meetings and do service for the fellowship.
· We learn how to gain financial and spiritual success and peace of mind.
